Beetle Bailey Turns 60, Not Going Anywhere

All I have to say is congratulations to Mort Walker on reaching the 60th anniversary of Beetle Bailey. He's doing what he loves and doing it well enough that he doesn't have to worry about needing to do anything else. Here's hoping I can say the same thing when I'm his age.

Red Dead Redemption Cheaters Face Online Ban

There are times when I have to sit down and ask the person I'm playing with, "do you want to play a game or do you just want to win? Because if it's the latter, let's just name you the winner so I can go on with enjoying myself while playing a game."

It's true that games have goals and victory conditions and the challenge is overcoming all of the odds to reach those goals. To reach the goal without participating in the game itself is a hollow victory indeed. So to all of those folks who think getting the status in the online game is more important than the game itself, congratulations. You've won. You are so cool. Now that you have won, you are free go someplace else while the rest of us have fun playing the game.

'Cathy' Comic Strip ENDING

The success of strips like Cathy is somewhat indicative of the capricious nature of the comic strip industry. Ms. Guisewite was not particularly talented as an artist by any stretch of the imagination, nor was there much variety in the strips content. She just happened to be at the right place at the right time and managed to edge out the hundreds of other candidates for the editor's attention.

Being in 700 papers is a tremendous feat for a comic strip. Generally speaking, when you reach 100 papers, you've got it made. I know I labored for years to get my own comic, Working Daze, above that magic number - but it wouldn't budge. After a while, I realized that I was drawing 6 comics a week for a fraction of minimum wage. That's when I decided to direct my talents elsewhere.

VIDEO GAME ART: Nintendo's "Art Academy" to Produce Next Great Artist

When the Art Accademy came out for the DSi (800 points or approximately $8 per semester) I was considering giving it a try. After all, here was an art program that didn't just let you do digital art, but helped you get better at it while you used it. Now it appears that the two downloads were just a taste of things to come in the full version - I hope its a taste, otherwise it seems a much better deal to just download the product and save yourself $4. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that if you are even the least bit interested in learning some new techniques, this might be worth a look. I've yet to experience any instruction where I haven't picked up something new and useful. And it's far cheaper than a Wacom tablet and Photoshop CS5!
